Summer Undergraduate Biomedical Research Experience (SUBRE)

The Summer Undergraduate Biomedical Research Experience (SUBRE) is a summer research program for undergraduate students attending colleges or universities in North Dakota.  It is funded by the North Dakota IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (ND INBRE) and the University of North Dakota School of Medicine & Health Sciences.  The goal of the program is to attract talented undergraduate students in ND majoring in science, technology, engineering and/or mathematics (STEM) to careers in the biomedical sciences.  The program provides a technology-driven 10-week summer research experience under the direction of selected faculty members at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, ND.  Students will gain experience using quantitative PCR, protein analysis, tissue culture, flow cytometry and cell sorting, and confocal microscopy to characterize gene expression in human cells.  Research projects are focused on the environmental effects of toxicants on the development of bladder cancer and renal disease.

The SUBRE program will have up to twenty (20) openings for the Summer of 2025 for rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors.  Preference will be given to students attending UND and those of higher education in North Dakota not having on-campus research programs.  Preference will be given to applicants without previous research experience.  All participants will receive a compensation package of $6,800 based on a 10-week, 40 hours per week research experience.  Enrolled UND students will also receive $2,000 to help with living expenses.  Students from non-UND institutions will have room and board on the UND Campus covered by the program.

The SUBRE program will begin Tuesday, May 27, 2025, and end Friday, August 1, 2025.   Interested participants must complete an application, including an autobiographical sketch, and submit their unofficial college transcript and two letters of recommendation.  Please submit applications and letters as soon as possible. Application review will begin no later than March 1. Applications will be accepted through April 15.
